Please Support Our Activ Team’s Fundraising ‘Clinic to Clinic’ Walk in Aid of Edale Mountain Rescue Team
We are thrilled to announce that Activ Physiotherapy has chosen Edale Mountain Rescue Team (EMRT) for this year's charity fundraiser and will be organising a team clinic-to-clinic walk from Totley to Hope in October.
Rob Small, EMRT's Fundraising Officer, said:"We are thrilled that Activ is supporting us. Everyone in our rescue team is a volunteer and we don't get any government funding. We provide a 24/7 rescue service for those in trouble – whether it's a missing person in Ecclesall Woods or someone who has had a nasty fall out in the Peak District."
EMRT has around 50 active members, four trainees and 20 support group volunteers who assist the rescue team but who are not directly involved in rescues. Becoming a member of the support group is a very necessary but less-time consuming way of helping the rescue team.
"We are constantly training new members to ensure we have sufficient people on the call out list going forward," adds Rob who reveals that becoming a member of the rescue team is "a massive commitment and requires about 18 months of intensive training from a pretty high entry level."
Most volunteers have a keen interest in the outdoors and keeping themselves fit. Some may have seen an EMRT rescue during a cycle trip or hike, which piqued their interest about how they themselves could help others whilst out and about.
Rescuing people often involves walking across challenging moorland or woodland terrain in adverse weather conditions but the team find themselves busiest during the summer months when there are more visitors to their operational area.
A take home message for hill safety, says Rob is to have a great day out and prepare for the trip.
"If you are new to the area or an activity, think about starting gently and gain experience as you go along. Think about it getting dark and how you will cope if you get lost or injured and let someone back home know when you will be expected back."
In 2024, EMRT attended 155 call outs and its search dog teams assisted other teams on 25 call outs.
Over the next few months, through our social media posts and InterActive newsletter, we will be taking a more in-depth look at the work of the rescue volunteers, interviewing people who have been rescued and learning about the puppies trained to be adult rescue dogs.
We will follow the journey of someone who has called 999 and explain exactly what happens when the police call out the EMRT. We will be looking at the equipment inside one of the team's first response vehicles used to help in a search and rescue in areas inaccessible to ambulances.
Money raised will go towards running costs including new vehicles, fuel and maintenance, ropes, all-weather coats for volunteers, dressings, bandages, painkillers and other medical kit, vehicle insurance and other essential costs. None of the volunteers or staff receive expenses and all work is 100 percent voluntary and unpaid.
Our October charity walk will take in the beautiful moorland on the outer edges of Sheffield as we follow a route through the picturesque Peak District to Hope. No doubt we will take 'a bit of a breather' along the way and enjoy some 'refreshment stops' at pubs and cafes en route. We will also be carrying donation buckets and promoting the outstanding work of EMRT.
We will be updating you about Activ's fundraising in the run up to the event.
