Is running good for you?

We often get asked, “is running actually good for you”? This is usually when a frustrated patient comes in with an injury related to running. The answer is YES! The benefits undoubtedly outweigh the costs of running. Many people partake regularly with no problems and it is a straightforward way to unwind and keep fit.

Running is an activity that has gained an increase in popularity for several years and millions of people run weekly in England. From fell running, ultra-marathons and athletics to park runs, jogging and road running, any person can take part.

Running is good for health

The benefits of running include weight loss, improved mood and reduced risk of illnesses such as heart disease and stroke.

Running and injury?

Unfortunately, injury can be a pitfall of running due to the large stresses put through the body every time a step is taken, which could be around 10,000 steps in a 10km run. Plus, a person with an existing problem such as arthritis or low back pain may find that running may irritate their problem occasionally.

How to prevent running injuries?

Having an existing problem or the risk of injury should not be a cause for concern if you prepare yourself well. Strengthening and mobility exercises help, so does an effective warm up and cool down and an efficient running style. In addition, a gradual increase in distance, for instance you are training for an event is beneficial.
