Empowering New Mums Through Antenatal And Postnatal Physiotherapy

Women's health is a cornerstone of overall wellbeing and nowhere is this more evident than during the transformative phases of pregnancy and postpartum. Pregnancy and childbirth bring about numerous physical changes that can result in discomfort or pain. As we embark on this journey, we proudly introduce ACTIV PHYSIO WOMEN, our Women's Health Physiotherapy Clinic, aimed at promoting optimal health and wellness for expectant and new mothers.

Antenatal Physiotherapy: Nurturing Wellness During Pregnancy.

Pregnancy brings remarkable changes to a woman's body, both physically and emotionally. Our antenatal physiotherapy services are designed to accompany expectant mothers on this incredible journey, offering support, education and personalised care. Recent studies underline the importance of regular physical activity during pregnancy for maintaining cardiovascular fitness, managing weight and improving overall mood and mental health.

Our clinic's expert physiotherapists are well-versed in tailoring exercise programmes that are safe and effective for pregnant women. By incorporating low-impact activities, pelvic floor exercises, massage and posture correction techniques, we empower women to alleviate common discomforts such as back pain, pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and long-standing aches exacerbated by pregnancy. This evidence-based approach not only contributes to a smoother pregnancy but also sets the stage for a healthier postnatal recovery.

Postnatal Physiotherapy: Restoring Strength And Function

The postpartum period presents unique challenges as women navigate the physical and emotional demands of new motherhood. Evidence from recent studies emphasises the importance of targeted physiotherapy interventions to aid in the postpartum recovery process. Our clinic offers comprehensive postnatal physiotherapy services that address the specific needs of postpartum bodies.

To take a few examples, we can treat new mothers for diastasis recti (abdominal separation) and instigate a proper rehabilitation plan. We can help aid recovery from C-section, provide a C-section scar massage and postpartum massage, re-establish pelvic floor function and restore a woman's overall core strength. These are all crucial components of postpartum rehabilitation.

Our physiotherapists employ evidence-based techniques to guide women through tailored exercise programmes that foster gradual muscle recovery, optimise posture and promote overall physical wellbeing. By focusing on a holistic approach that encompasses both physical and emotional aspects, we help mothers regain their confidence and vitality as they embrace their new roles.

N.B. Suvarna, who has extensive training in many  women's health issues, will introduce the ACTIV PHYSIO WOMEN Women's Health Physiotherapy Clinic towards the end of next month (September ‘23).  She hopes to address all these issues mentioned in greater length in future newsletters.
